Traditional Punjabi dancing in Calgary

Hundreds of thousands of immigrants leave their home countries but do not forget their traditional dances and clothes.

Life is like a dance where the beginning is difficult, but once you start, you shine like the sun. Similarly, every country has its own traditional dance, but have you ever thought about what the significance of traditional dance is?

“I have lived in Canada for the last 10 years and I have never forgotten about the culture and dance of Punjab. One day I thought of opening classes for students so that they would never miss their culture here,” said Jagjeet Singh, owner of Young Bhangara Calgary. “I succeeded in my goal and opened an academy for students. It was hard because I did not know anyone here, but I did not lose hope.”

There are many students coming to Young Bhangara to learn. No one is turned away, everyone is welcome.

Gidha and bhangra are folk dances for boys and girls. They are colourful dances spread across all the regions of India, usually performed on occasions and festivals.

Whenever Indian people are happy, they dance. There is a dress code for women: they tie their hair in two braids, wear jewelry, and put on traditional Punjabi dresses called salwar kameez. Men wear traditional suits called kurta pazamas and tie turbans.

“It is very important to share this dance in Calgary because everyone misses their culture in foreign countries. I decided to represent my culture in Canada as there are many festivals which we celebrated in India, but here we are unable to do because of the hectic schedule,” said student Param veer Kaur.

Everyone has their own hobbies to relax their minds or spend time with others. Most people love to listen to music and dance.

“There is no need to learn dance because traditional dance is in our veins from our birth. But still, we are participating in dance,” said student Noor jot Kaur.
